Safe Use of Pesticide (Boom & Handheld) Course

Course Description

This is a mandated health and safety training course for those applying/spraying pesticide.

The training course is a QQI Level 5, delivered over 2 non-consecutive days.

Learners can opt for the handheld (or knapsack) 5N0731 or boom spray 5N1797 course, depending on their requirement. Those successfully completing boom spray, do not need to also complete the handheld course.

Entry Requirements: A good command of the English language and a good level of numeracy and literacy. Candidates must be over the age of 16. Participants applying for this award should hold a level 4 and / or have relevant life and work experience.

Duration: 2 days tutor led on non-consecutive days. Total course duration is 50 hours. Participants will engage in independent learning outside of the formal training supported by an FRST tutor.

Training Materials: Participants must bring PPE – masks, overalls, gloves, safety boots and hi vis jacket on the second day of the course. All learning/notes material will be provided to you for the duration of the course and you will be registered for certification though our centre.

Assessment: Skills Demonstration – 60% (learner must achieve at least 40% in skills demo to pass) Written Exam – 40% Credit value: 5 credits

Certification: Successful candidates will achieve a QQI Level 5 minor award Boom Spray Pesticide Application (5N1797) or Handheld Pesticide Application (5N0731)

Learner Progression: Learners who are successful on this programme may carry forward a credit towards a major award in the future. For example, the major award in Horticulture 5M2586. Successful completion of this component award enables the learner to transfer to programmes leading to other certificates where this component is a mandatory or an elective requirement. This module or its equivalent is required by the Department of Agriculture in order to register as a professional user of pesticides with boom spraying.

Learner Supports: Learners will be supported by the trainer outside of formal delivery of the programme as required. Participants are expected to engage in independent learning outside of the formal training. Any additional learner support required must be made known in advance of training commencing to FRS Training  in order to make arrangements. Practical learner supports may be accommodated, including, but not limited to; scribes, magnifiers, enlarged text, additional examination time allowances and other alternative assessment or reasonable accommodation requests.
