Chloe Walsh, a teacher from Co. Laois shares her reason for completing the Best Practice in Milking course and explains how it gave her the confidence to tackle the Green Cert.
Chloe’s roots in farming run deep, having lent a hand on her family farm for years. However, it wasn’t until recently that Chloe fully immersed herself in farm life and wanted to deepen her understanding and skills in dairy farming. This growing interest led her to our 2-day QQI Level 6 ‘Best Practice in Milking Course’, a comprehensive course designed by industry experts including Teagasc and Animal Health Ireland.
“From originally only having ‘helped out’ on the family farm over the years, to having worked ‘fully part-time’ on a daily basis, I was delighted to see such a course was available to ‘fine-tune’ my dairy skills.”
Chloe very much enjoyed the practical approach of the course. Rather than just learning from books, she had the opportunity to get her hands dirty and learn directly in the parlour, mastering milking procedures and understanding the nuances of animal health and hygiene.
“The course was delivered in a comfortable learning environment by a very knowledgeable and engaging facilitator, which made it accessible to all learners. It covered all the essential information with regards to milking routines and caring for our animals, along with practical elements in the parlour, such as milking procedures and drying off cows”.
As well as mastering technical dairy skills, the course deeply influenced Chloe’s confidence and showed her the potential within herself to grow and evolve as a farmer.
“I would recommend this course to anyone looking to gain valuable insight into the best practice in dairy routines, and to anyone looking to provide a solid learning base to staff. Personally, the course has given substance to my knowledge and experience, and in doing so, it has given me the confidence to go ahead and tackle the Green Cert since then”.
Chloe’s feedback reminds us that learning is a lifelong pursuit, and growth often comes from stepping outside of our comfort zones. Her story serves as an inspiration to all farmers, reminding us of the value of continuous learning and the power of community support.
