The purpose of this award is to equip the learner with the knowledge, skill and competence in landscape construction and maintenance, to enable the learner to work under supervision and or with others in a variety of landscape construction and maintenance contexts.

Course Content

Learners will be able to:
1 Recognise the structural components of hard landscape features
2 Identify materials involved in hard landscaping
3 Recognise standards of workmanship and finish
4 Examine different techniques of staking and their uses
5 Recognise the features and use displays to include: herbaceous,
perennials, bulbs, corms, tubers, annuals, roses, hanging
baskets, window box, tubs and alpines
6 Identify a range of plants and herbs
7 Examine the year round maintenance programme for a lawn
8 Examine the use and different types of herbicides, pesticides
and fertilisers
9 Carry out a survey and plot and draw a survey area to scale
10 Perform pre-building skills to include: establishing levels and
falls, marking out Level 3s, setting up profiles and setting up
sight rails
11 Calculate area and volume
12 Select appropriate materials for hard landscaping
13 Lay a patio and construct a small wall from brick or stone
14 Construct steps with an appropriate tread and riser
15 Construct one of the following: water feature, timber feature,
drain, gully or rockery
16 Prepare the ground for planting and model and contour ground
prior to planting
17 Plant and stake a 10-12 cm girth, bare root tree
18 Prepare and sow a lawn and lay turves
19 Select suitable seed mixtures for different purpose lawns
20 Control weeds and moss by hoeing and mulching
21 Carry out pruning, training and trimming
22 Identify and control common pests and diseases
23 Identify areas requiring maintenance
24 Interpret information incorporated in a site plan
25 Estimate the cost of completing a range of hard landscaping
features in a particular situation
26 Plant a hedge and a range of shrubs from a plan
27 Design and plant a winter or spring bedding scheme
28 Maintain and use a lawnmower to cut a lawn to specific
29 Implement safe working practices.

Successful candidates will receive a QQI level 5 certificate in Landscape construction and maintenance
